How do you calculate a dog’s age in human years?

This tool uses the formula human age = 16 × ln(dog age in years) + 31, published by Wang and colleagues in Cell Systems (2020). It’s based on DNA-methylation “epigenetic clocks” shared between dogs and humans, so it reflects how dogs actually age — fast early on, then slowing down.

Is the “multiply by 7” rule accurate?

No. The 1-dog-year-equals-7-human-years rule has no scientific basis. Dogs mature much faster than 7× in their first two years and slower after, which is why a logarithmic formula fits real aging far better.

Does this work for young puppies?

The formula is calibrated for dogs from roughly 8 weeks of age. For younger puppies, a “human years” number isn’t very meaningful — what your puppy is going through developmentally is. Use the Puppy Stage Finder for that.

Does breed or size change how a dog ages?

Somewhat. The published formula was derived from Labrador Retrievers, so treat it as a well-grounded approximation rather than an exact figure — smaller breeds tend to live longer and larger breeds shorter, which shifts the later years.
